Violated Collective Rights: Mexico, The Multidimensional Impact of Extractive and Infrastructure Projects

In Mexico, 14 projects were identified that together have impacted more than 105 communities. 72% of the cases are related to infrastructure, and of these, nine of the 10 are associated with the energy sector. This statistic is influenced by the Mexican Energy Reform enacted by President Pena Nieto in 2014, which expanded the opportunity for private participation within the energy sector and offered incentives to encourage private investment in the development of renewable energy systems. 14% of cases are associated with timber extraction.
